Chapter Eight

One God’s Revenge

“And verily I say unto you,

Though the forces of evil assail our minds

And our bodies, with all their might,

Stay true to the Jheriem and ye shall always prevail.”

Book of Olon, 17:11.

Teryn waited impatiently for the teleportation magic to take effect. Normally, he didn’t mind the passage of time within the spell. Liked it, in fact. It was soothing in a way, and there was very little left to soothe him these days.

But right now, he was desperate for the spell to be done. Every moment he spent waiting, watching his surroundings blur, felt like an hour. So much depended on this mission’s success – Jennifer’s health, finding Jeremy, everything.

He looked over at Lyrad. The young priest looked like he was ready to kill something.

Tch. He probably is . . .

Inwardly, Teryn wondered where Terwain had gotten off to. The Sage Mind had been his constant companion since the start of this quest, but the last few days he’d been conspicuously absent. How he ached for Terwain’s advice right now. But try as he might, it made no difference. The voice in his head remained silent.

Moments later, his surroundings started to take shape again and he knew the spell had almost run its course. His shoulders tensed and he clenched his fists, uncertain of what he’d find at the other end of his spell.

“At last!” Lyrad called out from his side.

Teryn nodded. The spell had finished, and they were at their destination – the summit of Mount Malabohr.

Only the summit looked nothing like it had the last time he’d been there. The place was a mess. Massive stones had been unearthed and were strewn all about haphazardly, blocking most everything from view.

He bit his lip and put out a hand to caution Lyrad. “Careful,” he told the priest. “Something’s wrong.”

Lyrad nodded. “I sensed it too. But what?”

Teryn shook his head. “Let’s just proceed slowly, alright?”

Another nod. The young priest started forward and Teryn followed after him. He supposed it made sense – he was a far better combatant, and they had no idea what was waiting for them.

The two made their way along the rough-hewn stones, inching forward slowly to maintain their stealth. Teryn thought about casting spells to disguise them, but he wanted to save his strength for whatever lied ahead of them.

Rounding another of the giant stones, the full summit finally came into view. Teryn let out an audible gasp, ruining any surprise they might have had.

Before him lay the Great Dragon, as expected, but he was not alone. Hundreds – no, thousands – of Death Beasts stood between him and the magnificent creature, engaged in a battle to the death.

At their head stood the two Wyvern-Masters, Muertaa and Shade-Spinner. But that wasn’t the most shocking part. Standing next to them, seemingly aiding their advance, was none other than Xanatos.

Thaloun used the powers of the Golden Pool to transport himself back to Castle Coontan in the blink of an eye.
